In Memory of Sally King Self
The dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit who was poured out on believers in Acts 2 and "tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.
Sally Belle King Self, the daughter of Charles Richard Harriet Dowd Smith King, was born January 18, 1889 in Buena Vista, Chickasaw County, Mississippi She married Peyton Marion Burford Self of Marks Mississippi on October 25, 1910 at the family home in Okolona, MS. They lived in Marks, Mississippi where she was organist and pianist for their church. Mrs. Self was a dedicated member of local and state garden clubs and other civic and church organizations. Mr. Self owned several Delta plantations and the family had interests in banking and cot- ton production and by-products, including one of the first cotton seed oil mills in the south.
On Mrs. Self’s death on June 29, 1980, the pastor emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Marks wrote the following: “Members of the congregation, worshipping in this lovely building now, with all its comforts, cannot appreciate fully the labors and loyalty of those who through the years dreamed dreams and worked hard for their realization. Mrs. Self never sought honors or acclaims for herself but quietly promoted what would honor her Lord and make helpful the service of others. Truly the world about Marks is a more beautiful, a more cultured and a better place to live because of her having passed this way.”
“With queenly grace she passed down the highway of life and flowers of beauty and love mark the route of her footsteps Many will rise in the Judgment and call her ‘ Blessed’.”
Mrs. Self is the aunt of Hattie Mallory King Maxwell of this congregation. This window was given in Mrs. Self’s memory by The Self Foundation of Marks, MS which is a family- owned foundation that contributes to civic and religious groups in the southeastern area.
